‘Two Peas in a Pod’ – Hilary and Doreen’s Friendship
A friendship that offers comfort, support, and companionship can be incredibly valuable for those embarking on new journeys later in life.
The residents at Nodens Manor in Lydney have some truly heartwarming stories, showcasing the wisdom and friendships that have blossomed within the home. Hilary and Doreen’s friendship stands out as a favourite among many, with both women recalling their initial experiences of moving in.
A New Chapter…
Hilary and Doreen moved into Nodens Manor just five days apart earlier this year. Being in a care home was a new experience for both, with Doreen finding the transition to be quite strange initially, while Hilary felt lost at first. They both acknowledged that “It can feel lonely until you settle in and get into routine, but that’s all part of the process.”
Their friendship began quite simply when they found themselves sitting in the same corner, enjoying each other’s company. They cherished the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations, which laid the foundation for a bond that has only grown stronger over time.
Their connection deepened through mutual support and shared activities. Upon Hilary’s arrival to Nodens Manor after a stroke, she occasionally had difficulty expressing herself. However, Doreen was quick to grasp her intended meaning, fostering a sense of closeness and establishing a comforting environment for both of them.
A year and a half later, our team affectionately refers to them as ‘Two Peas in a Pod’ because we’ve witnessed their friendship blossom beautifully.
Together, they enjoy a variety of activities, including flower arranging and making pom-poms, with a newfound love for colouring.
Their friendship plays a crucial role in their daily lives, as they support each other both physically and emotionally. Hilary provides physical assistance, while Doreen serves as the emotional anchor, ensuring that they uplift each other throughout their shared journey at the home.
