Old Sarum Manor Care Home resident celebrated their 104th Birthday!
Last week, we celebrated Mr James Wren’s 104th birthday at Old Sarum Manor. In a tremendous effort, our wonderful team decorated the Sky Bar with balloons and other decorations, and our culinary team made a gorgeous cake for him. Jim enjoyed his day with his family, who joined him for the significant day. The Royal Marines in Plymouth also sent a video link of the Royal Marines band singing Jim Happy birthday which was very special.
Jim was an inspirational Royal Marine abroad HMS Repulse when it sank by Japanese bombers in 1941 hundreds of people died but Jim was lucky enough to count himself as one of the very few survivors. Although valiant efforts were made to save the lives of hundreds of civilian men, women and children, the Japanese had taken control of the routes blocking their escape. Jim along with others on board were taken prisoner. The conditions of Japanese prisoner of war were atrocious and many just didn’t survive. Jim was a prisoner of war for 3 and a half years and he was in fact still a prisoner when he found out that the war was over.
Many people find great inspiration in Jim, and we consider ourselves extremely fortunate to have such a remarkable man in our midst and to be able to commemorate this historic birthday alongside him.
Jim had an amazing birthday and thanked all of the staff at Old Sarum Manor for all they did to make his day as special as possible. Jim also thanked his loving family for all they do and all of their support.
