Our residents love to get involved in what’s going on, both in the home and nearby. Many of our residents also get involved in events happening in the local community and wider region.
Geoff, from Old Sarum Manor, put his best foot forward as he joined with other members of his family to take part in the Glow Memory Walk. A fundraising event designed to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society, Geoff and his family followed the route around Southsea’s historic seafront. Called the Glow Walk because walkers wear neon glow sticks to light up the night, the walk takes place after the sun has gone down. With the route well-lit, Geoff and his family walked for 5k to raise funds in support of dementia care and research. The money raised will go towards providing vital information and support, improving care, funding research and helping to make a real difference for people affected by Alzheimer’s.
Glow walks encourage walkers to wear bright neon clothes for their walk and carry glow sticks to raise as much money and awareness as they can for people living with Alzheimer’s and dementia as well as those caring for them.
The walks take place all across the UK, including Scotland and Northern Ireland, and people walk together to remember a loved one or to support the charity.
Starting at the Castle Field, the route took in many of Southsea’s landmarks, however the crowd were focused on the atmosphere and shared sense of community created by the walkers.
Geoff enjoyed his trip to Portsmouth very much and welcomed the chance to be part of such an important awareness raising charity event. The staff and residents at Old Sarum Manor loved to hear about Geoff’s Glow Walk upon his return and Geoff was able to share lots of stories about the people he met on the walk and just how bright the neon glow was.
