We were honoured to host Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Edinburgh at Old Sarum Manor Care Home in Salisbury on Tuesday, 12th August 2025.
The visit took place ahead of the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, and her meeting with Jim, 105-year-old War Veteran, was a highlight of the day. Jim, who applied to join the Army at just 19, served during World War II and was involved in the events commemorated on VJ Day. During their encounter, he shared inspiring stories of his service and life, and The Duchess’s warm and attentive engagement made it a memorable experience for everyone involved.
While this was a momentous occasion for Old Sarum, it was also a day dedicated to celebrating Jim’s incredible life. The visit was truly special for the home, and it was a privilege to welcome Her Royal Highness. The Duchess toured our home and participated in a seated exercise activity in our cinema, showing her enthusiasm and compassionate nature. Additionally, Her Royal Highness took the time to sit with one of our residents who had just celebrated his 100th birthday, which he found to be a truly memorable and touching moment.
The Duchess’s kind words about the care and service we provide were very much appreciated. Although the day was centred on Jim’s remarkable story, the Royal visit added an extra layer of joy and significance, making it a truly unforgettable occasion for all at Old Sarum.
