This Month Flowers Manor brought home the Wiltshire and Swindon Senior Games Trophy
What are the Senior Games?
Almost a third of adults over 65 in Wiltshire are not active enough, taking part in less than 30 minutes per week. High rates of inactivity among the older population can increase the risk of falls, Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive decline.
The Senior Games promote active living, wellbeing, and quality of life among older people, making every movement count, with a fun and friendly festival at the end of the 12 week project It has the long term aim of reducing avoidable hospital admissions by contributing to active ageing, and enabling individuals to live independently for as long as they are able to.
Getting involved
Flowers Manor were contacted by Jane from Love to Move, our residents had been selected to take part in the Senior Games 12 week program of Seated Exercise, with other games including Golf Putting, Tin Can Alley, and Bean Bag Target. We jumped at the chance as our residents love sports and exercise. Jane came every week and quickly started to love our Friday afternoon sessions. We were all excited that at the end of the program, we would be going on a trip to Abbeyfield School to compete with other local Care Homes, which was organised by WASP (Wiltshire and Swindon Sport) and Public Health Wiltshire.
The day of the competition had come, so we hurriedly prepared with our Flowers Manor t-shirts and boarded the bus with anticipation. We were greeted at Abbeyfield School by some friendly students who assisted us in getting to where we needed to go and struck up interesting talks. We started the event by having a warm-up. we all got stuck into the activities and had loads of fun on the way. A massive thank you to the students of Abbeyfield School for setting up, helping with the activities, and keeping score, it was a pleasure having them with us.
Taking Home the Win!
Congratulations to our residents that were selected to take part in this event, and a special congratulations to Eileen for getting the highest score in Tin Can Alley and Pauline for getting the highest score in Javelin.
It truly was a lovely day and a great end to the 12-week program and what made it even better was being lucky enough to win the whole competition!
