Flowers Manor Residents Achieve Their Dream of Growing Their Own Vegetables
Here at Flowers Manor Care Home, the residents have long been dreaming of having their own raised beds to grow their own vegetables and salads. And thanks to the tireless efforts of our dedicated residents, staff, and volunteers, this dream has finally become a reality.
The journey began when a group of residents came together to discuss their shared desire for a gardening project. With the support of our Lifestyle Team, they were able to bring their vision to life. Alan and Gerry took on the task of building the raised beds, carefully crafting them to ensure they were sturdy and accessible for all residents.
Next, a group of residents embarked on a trip to the local garden centre to select the perfect plants for their new beds. This outing was not only an opportunity for the residents to get some fresh air and exercise but also a chance for socialisation and bonding with one another.
Upon returning to the care home, the garden club members took over, carefully planting the chosen vegetables and salads into their new homes. As they worked, they shared stories and laughter, creating a sense of community and camaraderie that is at the heart of Flowers Manor’s care philosophy.
Now, as the residents wait patiently for their crops to grow, they are eagerly anticipating the taste and satisfaction that comes with enjoying homegrown produce. And it’s not just about the taste – there are numerous benefits for elderly who take part in gardening activities.
Research has shown that gardening can have a significant impact on both physical and mental health in older adults. The physical activity involved in gardening can help improve flexibility, balance, and strength, reducing the risk of falls and injuries. Additionally, gardening has been shown to have a positive effect on mental health, reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety while improving mood and overall well-being.
For those at Flowers Manor, this project is more than just a hobby – it’s a way to stay engaged, active, and connected with others. As they tend to their gardens, they are reminded of their independence and ability to make a difference.
As the residents at Flowers Manor continue to nurture their new gardens, they are not only growing delicious vegetables and salads but also fostering a sense of pride, purpose, and community. This project is a shining example of what can be achieved when teamwork and determination come together.
